The Maldives and Malaysia have exchanged two Memoranda of Understanding aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation in defence and Islamic affairs, during Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to the Maldives.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Prime Minister Anwar witnessed the formal exchange of the two agreements following official engagements between the governments on Monday.
The agreements introduce formal frameworks for closer cooperation between the two countries in defence and Islamic affairs, further expanding the scope of the longstanding Maldives-Malaysia relationship.
Speaking during the visit, President Muizzu described Anwar’s visit as a strong reaffirmation of the close relationship between the two countries.
The President said ties between the Maldives and Malaysia are built on deep fraternal bonds, mutual respect and trust, highlighting the importance both governments place on further strengthening the partnership.
Prime Minister Anwar was officially welcomed by President Muizzu at a ceremony held at Republic Square on Monday. The welcoming proceedings included a cultural performance by schoolchildren, a guard of honour and a 21-gun salute.
The two leaders subsequently held official talks, accompanied by senior officials from both governments, focusing on bilateral relations and opportunities to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The latest agreements broaden cooperation between the Maldives and Malaysia beyond their established links in areas such as trade, investment, tourism, education and people-to-people exchanges.
President Muizzu visited Malaysia in April 2025, during which the two governments signed several agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. The visit also provided an opportunity for the leaders to discuss expanding economic ties and cooperation across several sectors.
Formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Malaysia were established in 1968, with ties developing steadily over the decades.
Malaysia has become an important destination for Maldivians, particularly for higher education, healthcare, business and tourism, contributing to strong people-to-people connections between the two countries.
The exchange of the defence cooperation and Islamic affairs MoUs during Anwar’s visit represents the latest effort by both governments to broaden the partnership and establish new avenues for institutional cooperation.
