The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) Senate has unanimously approved a resolution granting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu the party’s presidential ticket for the 2028 election.
The resolution received the support of all 1,119 Senate members present at the meeting. It was formally proposed by Abdulla Ibrahim.
The resolution cited Article 88(b) of the PNC Charter, which states that a sitting president seeking a second term shall receive the party’s presidential ticket without having to contest a primary.
In making its case for President Muizzu’s second-term candidacy, the resolution highlighted what the party described as major achievements of his administration, including measures to strengthen national sovereignty, the withdrawal of foreign military personnel and improvements to the Maldives’ maritime surveillance capabilities.
It also pointed to the administration’s economic and fiscal measures, major housing initiatives including Ras Malé, plans for Digital Maldives 2.0 and efforts to expand access to international payment systems.
The resolution further cited the government’s actions against undocumented migration, initiatives aimed at strengthening Islamic values and national identity, and President Muizzu’s advocacy for Palestinian rights internationally.
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef backed the resolution, describing President Muizzu as a leader committed to protecting Maldivian independence, Islamic principles and national identity.
“We can only ensure stability, development and safety in this country by establishing a state while maintaining our independence. We will only have the opportunity to speak here on this soil if our independence is guaranteed. He recognises this and is working bravely towards it,” the Vice President said.
Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem also supported the resolution, saying President Muizzu maintains close contact with the public and governs according to the law without being influenced by business interests.
Parliamentary Majority Leader and Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah said PNC lawmakers were backing President Muizzu for another term on behalf of their constituents. He said the administration continues to work towards fulfilling the pledges made to the public.
The decision formalises a position senior PNC figures had already publicly expressed ahead of the party’s 2026 congress. PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla has called securing a second term for President Muizzu the party’s central objective for the 2028 presidential election.
President Muizzu, who took office in November 2023, is constitutionally eligible to seek a second five-year term in 2028.
