MWSC to begin serving Addu and Fuvahmulah before October 13

Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) is preparing to take over water and sewerage services in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City before October 13, as the government moves ahead with the dissolution of Fenaka Corporation.
MWSC and Fenaka have signed a framework agreement setting out the process for transferring water and sewerage operations in the two southern cities to MWSC.
The agreement was signed by MWSC Managing Director Hussain Fahmy and Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Afeef Hussain.
Fahmy said the necessary preparations are expected to be completed in time for MWSC to begin providing water and sewerage services in Addu and Fuvahmulah before October 13.
The transition will involve more than transferring responsibility for day-to-day services. Infrastructure, operational assets and ongoing projects currently managed by Fenaka will also be handed over to MWSC.
Customer information, existing contracts, inventories and other related responsibilities will be transferred after both companies complete the required verification procedures.
Teams from MWSC and Fenaka will conduct joint site visits, inspections and surveys as part of the handover process.
Both companies have said maintaining uninterrupted water and sewerage services will be a priority throughout the transition, with the transfer being carried out through a documented process designed to minimise disruption to customers.
Afeef said Fenaka is working closely with MWSC to facilitate the transition and expressed confidence that MWSC would further improve the standard of water and sewerage services provided to residents.
The transfer is part of a wider restructuring of state-owned enterprises announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu earlier this month.
The government decided to dissolve Fenaka Corporation and redistribute its utility operations as part of efforts to reduce duplication, lower expenditure and consolidate services under companies specialising in their respective sectors.
Under the restructuring now underway, State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) is assuming responsibility for electricity services previously managed by Fenaka, while MWSC will take over water and sewerage operations.
STELCO has already begun assessments and surveys in newly assigned islands as it prepares to expand its electricity operations across the country.
The transfer of Addu and Fuvahmulah services is particularly significant given previous concerns surrounding water supply in the southern cities.
Fuvahmulah City has experienced repeated disruptions to its water network, with the City Council previously raising concerns over interruptions and reports of water quality issues.
Addu has also faced problems with its water supply system, including service interruptions and concerns over water quality.
MWSC was involved in efforts to strengthen Addu’s water infrastructure even before the latest decision to transfer responsibility for operating the service.
The company had previously been contracted by the government to upgrade existing water supply facilities in Addu, giving it an established role in improving the city’s water infrastructure while operations remained under Fenaka.
The wider restructuring comes as the government seeks to consolidate utility services and improve the financial sustainability of state-owned companies.
The administration has also announced plans to acquire shares in MWSC currently held by foreign shareholders, with the aim of bringing the company under full state ownership.
With the framework agreement now signed, MWSC and Fenaka will proceed with inspections, asset verification, documentation and other preparations required for the handover.
MWSC expects to formally begin providing water and sewerage services to residents of Addu and Fuvahmulah before October 13.
