Police launch crackdown on dangerous drivers, repeat offenders to be publicly named

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 10 hours ago

The Maldives Police Service has launched a nationwide operation targeting dangerous and reckless driving, warning that repeat offenders could face criminal investigations and have their identities publicly disclosed.

Police said the operation is aimed at drivers whose behaviour endangers road users, threatens public safety and causes fear within communities.

Under the initiative, authorities are identifying and profiling motorists involved in reckless driving. Those identified may initially be summoned for formal counselling, while repeat offenders could face criminal investigations without prior warning, in addition to fines imposed under existing traffic laws.

Police said enforcement will focus on dangerous practices including zigzag driving, reckless overtaking, illegal racing and stunts, driving under the influence, excessive speeding and failing to slow down at speed breakers.

Vehicles modified with loud silencers and vehicles driven in a manner that causes components to drag along the road will also be targeted.

Drivers who refuse police orders to stop or attempt to evade officers will face strict action.

Hazardous vehicles identified during the operation will be impounded, with legal action taken against both the driver and the vehicle’s registered owner. Police said seized vehicles will remain in custody for 30 days. Vehicles not reclaimed within the prescribed period will be disposed of according to established procedures.

Police also revealed that employees of government institutions and state-owned enterprises have been identified as being involved in such activities. Information about those individuals is being shared with their employers so administrative disciplinary measures can be considered.

In a further step, police said the identities of repeat dangerous-driving offenders will be disclosed to the public.

Authorities will also investigate photographs, videos and other information submitted by members of the public after verifying the material.

The Maldives Police Service thanked the public for its continued cooperation and urged citizens to assist authorities in addressing dangerous behaviour on the country’s roads.

The operation was announced in a press statement issued on October 3, 2026.
