Grab driver in fatal crash that killed Maldivian student tests positive for methamphetamine

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 5 hours ago

The Grab driver involved in the fatal road accident that killed 21-year-old Maldivian student Aminath Imili Nazim in Malaysia has tested positive for methamphetamine, according to Malaysian media reports.

Malaysian police reportedly conducted a preliminary drug screening on the driver following the crash, with the test returning positive for methamphetamine.

The driver has since been remanded for four days to assist police with the investigation.

Malaysian media reported that police are investigating the case under Section 44(1)(a) of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act.

The development follows the death of Imily, who sustained serious injuries after the Grab vehicle in which she was travelling was involved in a collision on Sunday. She later died from her injuries.

The Standard earlier reported that Imily was travelling with another Maldivian female student when the accident occurred. The second Maldivian sustained injuries but was reported to be in a non-critical condition.

Malaysian media reported that Imili was a student at Taylor’s University.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash are continuing.

Under Malaysia’s Road Transport Act, driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs and causing death is treated as a serious offence. Malaysian police have previously said Section 44 provides for imprisonment, fines and disqualification from driving upon conviction.
