The Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race (DMRR) 2026 has attracted a record number of participants, with more than 5,500 runners registering for this year’s event, making it the largest edition of the annual race to date.
Registration has now closed for the event, which is scheduled to take place on Friday, November 20, at Hulhumalé Central Park.
Organisers initially planned to accommodate 4,000 runners but increased the registration limit following stronger-than-expected demand, allowing an additional 1,500 participants to secure places.
The final registration figure represents the highest participation recorded in the event’s history, further strengthening its position as the largest annual running event in the Maldives.
This year’s race will also mark an important development for competitive running in the country, with DMRR 2026 officially recognised as a World Athletics Ranking Competition.
The event will take place on a World Athletics-certified course, measured in cooperation with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).
The recognition means that eligible performances recorded during the competition can contribute towards athletes’ World Athletics rankings, providing runners with an opportunity to achieve internationally recognised results while competing in the Maldives.
For competitive athletes, the development adds a new dimension to the race, creating opportunities to measure their performances against international standards without necessarily having to travel overseas.

The recognition also strengthens the event’s international sporting profile as the Maldives continues to develop its presence in organised distance running.
DMRR 2026 will feature three main race distances: the Half Marathon, 10K and 5K Open.
New team categories have also been introduced for this year’s edition, expanding participation opportunities beyond the traditional individual races.
The variety of distances is intended to accommodate runners with different levels of experience, from seasoned athletes aiming for competitive results to beginners participating in their first organised race.
While the half marathon presents a longer-distance challenge for experienced runners, the shorter categories offer opportunities for recreational participants and individuals seeking to improve their fitness.
Over the years, the Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race has grown into a major event on the country’s sporting calendar, attracting participants from across the Maldives as well as international runners.
The event is recognised as the first international running race held in the country and is included in the AIMS World Running Calendar.
Its certified race route and international recognition have helped establish the competition as a platform for both recreational and competitive distance running.
Beyond the sporting aspect, the annual race also serves a charitable purpose.
Dhiraagu has once again dedicated the 2026 edition to child protection, continuing a cause that forms a central part of the company’s corporate social responsibility activities.
Through the event, non-governmental organisations working in child protection will be provided with opportunities to raise awareness about children’s rights and generate financial support for their activities.
The initiative aims to bring greater public attention to issues affecting children while encouraging individuals and communities to contribute to organisations working in the field.
By combining a large-scale sporting event with charitable fundraising, the race seeks to create benefits extending beyond the participants themselves.
Dhiraagu has also positioned the event as part of its efforts to encourage healthier lifestyles and greater participation in physical activity.
With more than 5,500 runners now registered, the upcoming race is expected to bring together a diverse group of participants, including competitive athletes, recreational runners and teams taking part in the newly introduced categories.
The record turnout comes alongside the event’s new World Athletics ranking status, marking two significant milestones for the 2026 edition.
Organisers are now preparing to welcome participants to Hulhumalé Central Park on November 20 for what is set to be the biggest Dhiraagu Maldives Road Race yet.
