President Muizzu aims to make Maldives self-sufficient in selected food products

By Hussain Shinan Published 4 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has outlined the government’s ambition to significantly expand agricultural production in the Maldives, with the long-term objective of meeting domestic demand for selected food products without relying on imports.

In a message shared on X to mark Farmers’ Day on Thursday, October 15, President Muizzu said strengthening local agriculture was essential to improving national food security, protecting the economy from external disruptions and creating more opportunities for Maldivian farmers.

The President said the government intends to develop the agricultural sector to a level where sufficient quantities of selected crops can be cultivated locally to meet the country’s requirements.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to reduce the Maldives’ dependence on imported food, which leaves the country vulnerable to changes in international commodity prices and disruptions to global supply chains.

As an island nation with limited agricultural land, the Maldives has traditionally relied heavily on overseas markets to meet its food requirements, particularly for fresh produce and other essential commodities.

This dependence means fluctuations in global food prices, shipping costs and international transportation can directly affect the availability and affordability of food in the domestic market.

President Muizzu highlighted these vulnerabilities, stressing that increasing domestic production would help protect the country from sudden price increases and logistical difficulties affecting international food shipments.

He also linked the development of agriculture to national sovereignty, describing the ability to cultivate food locally through environmentally sustainable practices as an important element of strengthening the country’s independence.

The President said reducing reliance on foreign suppliers would not only improve food security but also support the wider economy by limiting the amount of foreign currency spent on importing agricultural products.

For the Maldives, where foreign currency demand is closely connected to the import of essential goods, greater domestic production could help retain more foreign exchange within the economy.

Expanding agriculture is also expected to create additional employment and income-generating opportunities across the atolls, particularly in islands where farming already contributes to local livelihoods.

Agriculture remains an important economic activity in several parts of the country, with farmers cultivating fruits, vegetables and other crops for local consumption and commercial distribution.

However, the sector faces longstanding challenges, including limited cultivable land, freshwater constraints, soil conditions and the logistical difficulties associated with transporting produce between islands.

These challenges have restricted the scale of domestic agricultural production and contributed to the continued reliance on imported food.

The President said the government would continue supporting farmers through the introduction and expansion of modern agricultural technologies, with the aim of improving productivity and increasing the range of crops that can be grown locally.

Modern cultivation methods, including controlled-environment farming and more efficient irrigation systems, can help address some of the limitations associated with traditional agricultural practices in island environments.

Such technologies may also allow farmers to improve yields, use resources more efficiently and maintain more consistent production despite changing weather conditions.

Muizzu emphasised that the government’s objective is to achieve sufficient local production of specific agricultural products to eliminate the need to import those particular items.

The statement indicates a targeted approach to agricultural self-sufficiency rather than an immediate commitment to producing every category of food consumed in the Maldives.

The President also acknowledged the contribution of farmers to the national economy, highlighting their role in strengthening food security and supporting economic activity beyond the country’s main urban centres.

Farmers’ Day, observed annually on October 15, provides an opportunity to recognise the work of agricultural producers and draw attention to the importance of developing a more resilient domestic food supply.

The government’s latest commitment places greater emphasis on increasing local production as a means of addressing food security concerns while supporting employment, foreign currency conservation and sustainable economic development.

While the President did not announce specific production targets or a timeline for achieving the proposed level of self-sufficiency, he reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to assisting the agricultural sector through modern technology and continued government support.
