Visit Maldives seeks Turkish Airlines partnership ahead of Visit Maldives Year 2027

By Hussain Shinan Published 2 hours ago

Visit Maldives Corporation has held discussions with Turkish Airlines on potential joint marketing initiatives aimed at attracting more international visitors to the Maldives ahead of Visit Maldives Year 2027.

The discussions focused on using the airline’s extensive international network to strengthen the Maldives’ visibility in major tourism markets and encourage more travellers to choose the destination.

Visit Maldives Corporation Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Abdulla Yasir met with Turkish Airlines Country Manager for Sri Lanka and the Maldives Burak Karali to explore opportunities for closer cooperation between the national tourism promotion body and the airline.

The introductory meeting was also attended by Ali Thoriq, Managing Director of Expedite Maldives Pvt Ltd, and Waseem Razak, the company’s Sales, Reservation and Ticketing Manager.

Expedite Maldives serves as the General Sales Agent (GSA) for Turkish Airlines in the Maldives.

According to Visit Maldives Corporation, discussions centred on developing promotional activities that could help increase tourist arrivals by reaching potential travellers through Turkish Airlines’ international network.

The proposed cooperation would focus on improving destination awareness in important source markets while exploring marketing initiatives capable of translating interest in the Maldives into actual travel bookings.

The discussions come as the Maldives prepares for Visit Maldives Year 2027, an initiative intended to strengthen the country’s international tourism promotion and expand its reach among travellers in existing and emerging markets.

Airline partnerships are an important component of destination marketing, particularly for island nations such as the Maldives, where international air connectivity plays a central role in tourism growth.

Turkish Airlines operates an extensive international route network through its Istanbul hub, connecting destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

Its network provides opportunities to promote the Maldives to travellers in multiple markets, including those who may reach the destination through connecting flights.

For the Maldives, such partnerships can help extend the reach of tourism campaigns beyond traditional advertising by combining destination promotion with the airline’s established passenger network and distribution channels.

Joint marketing initiatives between tourism authorities and airlines can include coordinated advertising campaigns, destination-focused promotions and other activities designed to encourage travellers to make bookings.

The discussions also reflect the growing importance of converting destination awareness into measurable visitor demand, rather than focusing solely on attracting attention through promotional campaigns.

Tourism remains the principal driver of the Maldivian economy, supporting employment, foreign exchange earnings and businesses across the hospitality, transport and service sectors.

Maintaining strong international air connections is therefore essential to sustaining visitor arrivals and supporting the continued development of the country’s tourism industry.

Visit Maldives Corporation has been working to strengthen the country’s presence in international tourism markets through promotional activities and engagement with travel industry partners.

The planned Visit Maldives Year 2027 provides an additional opportunity to coordinate promotional efforts with airlines, travel companies and other tourism stakeholders.

Although the meeting identified potential areas for collaboration, neither Visit Maldives Corporation nor Turkish Airlines has announced a formal agreement or specific promotional campaign arising from the discussions.

Further details of any joint initiatives are expected to be determined as the two parties explore opportunities for cooperation ahead of 2027.
