Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has convened a meeting of the Velana International Airport Security Committee (VIASC) to review aviation security matters and strengthen coordination among agencies responsible for safeguarding the country’s main international airport.
The meeting was chaired by MACL Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, bringing together key stakeholders involved in maintaining security at Velana International Airport (VIA).
According to MACL, discussions focused on aviation security matters and improving cooperation between the relevant authorities to ensure that security arrangements at the airport remain effective.
The meeting provided an opportunity for stakeholders to review existing security measures, exchange information and strengthen coordination in addressing matters related to airport safety and security.
Velana International Airport serves as the Maldives’ primary international aviation gateway, handling the majority of international passenger arrivals and departures.
As the country’s busiest airport, VIA plays a central role in supporting tourism, international connectivity and the movement of passengers and cargo.
Maintaining effective aviation security arrangements is particularly important given the airport’s role in connecting the Maldives with international destinations and facilitating the arrival of tourists from across the world.
Airport security committees serve as coordination mechanisms for organisations involved in aviation operations, security enforcement and airport management.
Their responsibilities generally include facilitating cooperation between relevant agencies, reviewing security arrangements and supporting the implementation of aviation security requirements.
Such coordination is essential because airport security involves several interconnected areas, including passenger screening, access control, protection of restricted areas and the security of aircraft and airport facilities.
International aviation security standards are established through frameworks developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which sets requirements and guidance for member states to protect civil aviation against acts of unlawful interference.
These standards provide the foundation for national aviation security programmes and operational procedures implemented at international airports.
For the Maldives, maintaining compliance with aviation security requirements is particularly important because of the country’s dependence on international air travel.
The tourism industry relies heavily on reliable air connectivity, making the safety and security of airport operations a priority for both aviation authorities and airport operators.
The meeting also comes as Velana International Airport continues to develop its infrastructure and passenger-handling capacity to accommodate the country’s aviation and tourism requirements.
The airport’s expansion and modernisation have increased the importance of ensuring that operational procedures and security arrangements remain coordinated across the different agencies working within the airport environment.
MACL has not disclosed the specific security matters discussed during the committee meeting or announced any new security measures arising from the discussions.
However, the company emphasised the importance of continued cooperation among stakeholders in maintaining a secure operating environment at VIA.
The latest meeting reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional coordination and ensure that aviation security remains a central consideration in the airport’s operations.
