The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron has successfully concluded a series of joint military training activities with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard, further strengthening maritime security cooperation between India and the Maldives.
The Indian High Commission in Malé confirmed on Saturday, October 24, that the engagement included a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) involving three visiting vessels: INS Tir, INS Sujata and Indian Coast Guard Ship ICGS Sarathi.
The ships arrived in Malé on October 21 as part of the Indian Navy’s long-range training deployment.
During the visit, the squadron’s senior officer met the MNDF Chief of Defence Force and the Commandant of the MNDF Coast Guard. Discussions focused on expanding military cooperation, strengthening maritime coordination and maintaining regular engagement between the two forces.
Indian naval trainees also visited the MNDF Girifushi Training Centre as part of professional exchanges. The programme included opportunities for personnel to share operational experience and strengthen cooperation.
The squadron’s senior officer also met Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives G. Balasubramaniam.
Before arriving in the Maldives, the three vessels visited Seychelles, where they conducted a similar maritime exercise with the Seychelles Coast Guard.
The latest engagement forms part of India’s MAHASAGAR initiative, which promotes maritime security, regional cooperation and capacity building across the Indian Ocean.
India and the Maldives maintain longstanding defence cooperation through military training, joint exercises and maritime security initiatives aimed at strengthening regional stability.
