President Muizzu congratulates Lula on re-election as Brazil’s president

By Hussain Shinan Published 2 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on securing a historic fourth presidential term, extending his best wishes as the South American nation prepares for another four years under Lula’s leadership.

In a congratulatory message, President Muizzu conveyed greetings on behalf of the government and people of the Maldives, recognising Lula’s electoral victory as a reflection of the confidence placed in his leadership by the Brazilian public.

The President commended Lula’s commitment to national development and acknowledged his longstanding efforts to advance Brazil’s progress.

He described the election result as a demonstration of the trust Brazilian citizens continue to place in Lula’s leadership and public service.

President Muizzu also praised the Brazilian leader’s dedication and perseverance in pursuing the country’s development objectives, expressing confidence in his continued leadership during the coming presidential term.

Concluding his message, President Muizzu wished Lula success in fulfilling his responsibilities, alongside good health and continued prosperity and sustainable development for the people of Brazil.

The congratulatory message follows Lula’s victory in Brazil’s presidential runoff election held on Sunday, October 25, in which he defeated Senator Flávio Bolsonaro to secure an unprecedented fourth term as president.

According to results published by Brazilian authorities, Lula received approximately 51.79 percent of valid votes, while Bolsonaro secured 48.21 percent.

The result gave Lula more than 64 million votes and a winning margin of approximately 4.4 million, marking another significant achievement in his decades-long political career.

The election was closely contested, with Lula overcoming a first-round deficit to secure victory in the final round of voting.

Lula, a prominent figure in Brazilian politics and a founding member of the Workers’ Party, previously served two consecutive presidential terms between 2003 and 2010.

He returned to power after winning the 2022 presidential election, beginning his third term in January 2023.

His latest victory makes him the first individual to be elected president of Brazil four times through direct elections.

Lula’s political career has been closely associated with efforts to address poverty, strengthen social welfare programmes and expand economic opportunities for lower-income communities.

During his earlier administrations, Brazil introduced and expanded major social assistance initiatives aimed at improving living standards and reducing inequality.

His leadership has also attracted international attention for Brazil’s role in global economic cooperation, environmental policy and diplomatic engagement.

As Latin America’s largest economy, Brazil remains an influential participant in international affairs, including through the Group of Twenty (G20) and BRICS.

The country also plays a prominent role in international discussions concerning climate change, sustainable development and the interests of developing economies.

For the Maldives, sustainable development and climate resilience remain important foreign policy priorities, particularly given the country’s vulnerability to rising sea levels and other consequences of climate change.

Both countries participate in international efforts addressing environmental protection and sustainable development, although their economic circumstances and geographical challenges differ considerably.

President Muizzu’s message reflects the Maldives’ practice of extending diplomatic congratulations to international leaders following major electoral victories.

Lula is scheduled to begin his fourth presidential term on January 5, 2027, under Brazil’s revised constitutional arrangements governing presidential inaugurations.

The new term will extend his leadership of Brazil until 2030, following a closely fought election that has reaffirmed his position as one of the country’s most enduring political figures.
