Maldives urges Commonwealth to turn shared challenges into collective action

By Hussain Shinan Published 2 hours ago

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has called for stronger cooperation among Commonwealth nations, proposing three priority areas to help member countries build long-term resilience and respond more effectively to shared challenges.

Addressing the second executive session of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026 in Antigua and Barbuda, the Vice President outlined an approach centred on strengthening national capabilities, respecting individual countries’ development priorities and translating common challenges into coordinated action.

Representing the Maldives at the high-level gathering, Latheef emphasised the importance of partnerships that deliver lasting benefits for member states rather than focusing solely on immediate needs.

His first proposal focused on building sustainable capacity, highlighting the need for cooperation that enables countries to strengthen their institutions, develop expertise and become better equipped to manage future challenges.

The second priority called for Commonwealth partnerships to respect national objectives, recognising that member countries face different economic, social and environmental circumstances.

The Vice President’s third proposal centred on transforming shared challenges into collective action, encouraging Commonwealth nations to work together on issues that require cooperation beyond national borders.

The proposals come as small island developing states, including the Maldives, continue to face challenges arising from climate change, economic vulnerability and the high costs associated with delivering essential services across geographically dispersed communities.

For the Maldives, international cooperation remains particularly important in areas such as climate adaptation, sustainable development, economic resilience and access to technical expertise.

The Commonwealth brings together 56 independent and equal member countries, ranging from some of the world’s largest economies to small island states facing distinct development challenges.

Its biennial Heads of Government Meeting provides a platform for leaders and senior representatives to discuss shared priorities, strengthen diplomatic relations and identify opportunities for cooperation.

The Maldives rejoined the Commonwealth in February 2020, having previously withdrawn from the organisation in 2016.

Since returning to the association, the country has participated in Commonwealth initiatives involving governance, sustainable development, education and climate-related cooperation.

Small island developing states have consistently advocated for greater recognition of their vulnerabilities within international development frameworks, particularly in relation to climate financing, economic shocks and access to concessional funding.

The Maldives has also sought to highlight the disproportionate impact of climate change on low-lying island nations, despite their relatively small contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions.

Latheef’s proposals at CHOGM 2026 reflect the Maldives’ emphasis on international partnerships that support national development priorities while encouraging a coordinated response to challenges affecting Commonwealth countries.

The Vice President’s intervention placed particular emphasis on ensuring that cooperation produces practical and sustainable outcomes for member states.
