The Maldives and China’s Hainan University have held talks on expanding cooperation in fisheries and the blue economy. They also discussed strengthening academic and technical collaboration between the two sides.
The discussions took place between the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources and a delegation from Hainan University. The ministry shared details of the meeting on X.
The meeting builds on an existing partnership. Experts from Hainan University previously took part in a training programme on fisheries and the blue economy held in the Maldives.
That programme opened the way for Maldivian participants to share knowledge and experience in several areas: sustainable fishing practices, the cultivation of marine resources such as sea cucumbers and seaweed, and the protection and restoration of coral reefs.
According to the ministry, the latest round of talks gave both sides an opportunity to build on earlier work and identify new areas where cooperation could be expanded.
The main aim of the partnership is to strengthen the technical capacity of Maldivians in managing fisheries and marine resources. It also seeks to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable practices in the sector.
