Maldives Immigration has arrested two foreigners found living in the country illegally, after checking 97 expatriates during an operation in Malé last night.
The operation was carried out by a joint task force targeting foreigners residing in the Maldives in violation of immigration regulations, during which officers questioned expatriates in various areas of the capital.
According to Immigration, a total of 97 individuals were checked during the operation.
Of these, two foreigners who were found to be living in the Maldives illegally were taken into Immigration custody.
The operation forms part of a wider effort to identify and take action against foreigners living and working in the country illegally.
Immigration has carried out a series of raid operations this year and last year, during which a large number of undocumented foreigners have been taken into custody.
Authorities are also continuing work to repatriate those held at the deportation centre in connection with these cases to their home countries.
In last night’s operation in Malé, 97 foreigners were checked and two were taken into custody.
