Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, has underscored the government’s commitment to combining infrastructure projects with the progressive development of island communities. Speaking at a ceremony in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll, the minister highlighted the importance of fostering both physical and human development to ensure the nation reaps the full benefits of progress.
The event marked the donation of solar-powered street lamps by the Chinese government, part of a renewable energy initiative aligned with the administration’s broader goals. Minister Umar emphasized that focusing solely on infrastructure would be insufficient, stating, “The need for progressive development of the people is essential for the country to reap the true benefits of development.”
A significant aspect of the government’s strategy involves empowering local councils by granting greater financial autonomy. Minister Umar detailed efforts to strengthen connections between councils and their communities, as well as between councils and the central government. He noted, “Divisions and attempts to undermine others in the community will impede the island’s development,” stressing the importance of unity for sustainable progress.
The installation of solar-powered street lamps in Maafushi represents the administration’s push for renewable energy adoption. Minister Umar highlighted that such projects not only lower energy costs but also support environmental sustainability. The solar initiative is one of many under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration aimed at advancing decentralization and modernizing the Maldives.
The solar lamps were donated by the Yunnan Provincial People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (YNPAFFC) and are valued at approximately USD 35,000. The donation includes 170 lamps, batteries, and necessary equipment, providing Maafushi with an eco-friendly lighting solution.
Concluding his address, Minister Umar reiterated the administration’s dual focus on infrastructural growth and human development, ensuring progress benefits all citizens. The event in Maafushi serves as a reflection of the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable and inclusive development across the Maldives.
