The Maldivian government is intensifying efforts to complete the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) ahead of schedule, according to Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen.
In a statement marking International Civil Aviation Day, Minister Ameen highlighted the transformative role of civil aviation in driving economic and social progress globally. He emphasized that the Maldives has successfully embraced advancements in aviation, positioning itself among developing nations that have kept pace with modern changes in the industry.
Ameen detailed several key developments within the aviation sector, aligning with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision. He announced that the national airline, Maldivian, is set to expand its operations, introducing its first wide-body aircraft and adding new international routes to its portfolio.
The minister also addressed the ongoing construction of VIA’s new international terminal, commending its steady progress while revealing the government’s push to accelerate the project’s timeline. The terminal, once operational, is expected to enhance flight frequencies for both domestic and international airlines, improving passenger services and boosting the country’s connectivity.
Further diversifying the civil aviation landscape, the Maldives is preparing to reintroduce helicopter operations. This service will facilitate medical evacuations, tourist transfers between resorts and airports, and night flights to regions lacking domestic airports.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the operator of VIA, previously stated that the new terminal is slated for completion and passenger use by mid-2025. The government’s efforts, however, aim to bring this timeline forward.
Looking ahead, Minister Ameen noted that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is scheduled to audit the Maldives’ compliance with global aviation standards next year. He expressed confidence in the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), predicting a successful outcome that reflects the government’s commitment to excellence in aviation safety and service.
These initiatives collectively underscore the Maldives’ commitment to enhancing its aviation infrastructure and solidifying its position as a premier travel destination.
