The President’s Office has officially opened applications for two vacant member positions on the Maldives’ Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Interested candidates have until 12 p.m. on December 16 to submit their applications.
The vacancies were created following the recent resignations of ACC Vice President Abdul Salaam and member Thoha Mohamed. The resignations came shortly after the Parliamentary Independent Institutions Committee recommended their dismissal over allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
Strengthening Oversight Through New Amendments
This recruitment process follows recent amendments to laws governing independent institutions like the ACC and the Elections Commission. These changes require the President to appoint the heads and deputies of these commissions, with the appointments subject to parliamentary approval through a majority vote.
The amendments also clarify procedures for resignation, mandating that the president and vice president of the commissions must submit their resignation letters directly to the President. Current officeholders will retain their positions unless removed in accordance with the law.
Renewed Focus on Accountability
The ACC plays a critical role in combating corruption and ensuring transparency in governance. The new appointments are seen as an opportunity to bolster the institution’s credibility and operational capacity in the wake of recent allegations against its former members.
As the application period progresses, the government aims to ensure a transparent and rigorous selection process to restore public trust and uphold the Commission’s mandate to fight corruption effectively.
