The Maldives Police Service has inaugurated a state-of-the-art surveillance center in the southern region, marking a significant step in enhancing public safety and strengthening ties between law enforcement and the community.
The center, located in Addu City, was officially opened on Sunday by Police Commissioner Ali Shujau. It operates under the jurisdiction of the southern regional command, which includes Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Fuvahmulah City, and Addu City itself.
Enhanced Surveillance and Connectivity
Equipped to monitor over 300 CCTV cameras installed across Addu City, including Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo islands, the center is the first of its kind outside the capital, Malé. The facility is designed to operate 24 hours a day, with dedicated staff ensuring continuous surveillance to detect and respond to suspicious activities.
“This is a 24-hour surveillance center,” Commissioner Shujau told reporters after the inauguration. “Whenever we spot something suspicious through these cameras, the police will immediately take action from there.”
The new center is also set to streamline communication between the islands under the southern regional command, linking police services and facilitating better coordination across the region.
Strengthening Community Trust
Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shameem, who serves as the South Division Commander, emphasized that the facility is expected to boost public trust in law enforcement.
“If someone reaches out to the center and requests confidentiality, we will respect that,” Shameem assured. “This center will enhance the trust and confidence between the police and the people.”
The Maldives Police Service highlighted that the center would not only improve surveillance but also expedite the delivery of police services to residents in the region, making it easier for people to seek assistance and provide information.
A Safer, More Connected South
By bringing the police service closer to the community, the surveillance center aims to foster a safer and more connected southern region. With its cutting-edge technology and round-the-clock operation, the facility represents a major milestone in the Maldives’ efforts to strengthen public safety and ensure a secure environment for its citizens.
