A man has been sentenced to 27 days in prison for stealing a 500-gram packet of Nescafe Classic from the Ihusaan shop on Lonuziyaaraiy Magu in Male’. The Criminal Court delivered the verdict on Monday.
According to court documents, Safwan Zufrath entered the store at 7:13 AM on July 2nd last year. He attempted to conceal the coffee packet in his jeans and leave the premises. He was charged with attempting to unlawfully exercise control over another person’s property.
Zufrath admitted to the charge, affirming that he acted independently, without any external pressure or influence. Based on his admission of guilt, the court concluded there was no doubt about his offense. Typically, this crime carries a sentence of one year and six months of imprisonment.
The court found no aggravating factors to extend Zufrath’s basic punishment. Thus, due to his guilty plea, his sentence was reduced by 27 days, resulting in a final sentence of 27 days in jail.
