Ahmed Nareesh, the Deputy Mayor of Male’ City Council, has expressed concerns over the potential loss of all documents stored in the Ministry of Housing following a fire incident in the building today. The Land Section of the Male’ City Council, which oversees the registry of plots and buildings in Male’, operates in the building.
In a social media video message after visiting the fire site, Nareesh warned that there is a significant risk of losing critical records. These include house registries, birth and death certificates, family histories, historical archives, and development project documentation—all crucial to Male’s history.
Nareesh emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that this incident represents a severe tragedy.
The fire, which began in the building shared by the Ministry of Housing and Ministry of Environment, was contained after approximately two hours. According to police reports, the blaze originated around 6:30 AM in the M. Green Building, office to the Ministry of Environment and EPA. It subsequently spread to the adjacent Ministry of Housing building.
