The Police Service has initiated an investigation into allegations that plots of land in Hulhumalé were improperly allocated to individuals not eligible under the Binveriya scheme. Leaked documents, shared by Hassan Kurushee on X, suggest that agreements were made to allocate plots to individuals deemed ineligible when they initially applied under the Binveriya scheme. Notably, these agreements lack a notary seal.
The Housing Ministry is seeking legal advice to ensure that all agreements under the Binveriya scheme are properly notarized. Akram Kamaluddin, who served as the State Minister of the Ministry at the time these agreements were executed, asserted that all legitimate land allocation agreements would carry a notary seal. He further alleged that any agreements without notary seals are likely to be backdated and forged documents.
One such controversial document leaked on social media involves an agreement to allocate a plot in Hulhumalé to Fazeel Rasheed, brother of HDC’s Managing Director Fazul Rasheed. Additionally, a letter from HDC to the Housing Ministry requesting approval for constructing a boundary wall on this plot has surfaced. The Housing Ministry responded in writing, stating no prior knowledge of such an agreement. Both letters are currently circulating online, with HDC yet to confirm their authenticity.
The police have confirmed the commencement of an investigation following reports on this issue. According to various newspapers, a police team is actively conducting inquiries at HDC regarding these allegations.
