In a landmark announcement at a ceremony held at Velana International Airport (VIA) this evening, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu revealed that Maldivian, the national airline, is set to expand its fleet with the introduction of a second wide-body aircraft, commencing operations in October. This event marked the inauguration of Maldivian’s first wide-body aircraft, an Airbus A330, deemed a historic milestone for the nation’s aviation sector.
President Muizzu highlighted the strategic efforts undertaken during the presidential election period, where discussions and decisions regarding the expansion of the aviation sector were integral to the manifesto development process. The expansion of Maldivian’s capacity was identified as pivotal for advancing the tourism industry in the Maldives.
“In pursuit of this goal, we decided to introduce wide-body aircraft capable of long-haul flights. I committed to bringing two wide-body aircraft to Island Aviation and expanding operations,” stated President Muizzu.
With the arrival of the first Airbus A330 at VIA today, President Muizzu announced that collaborative efforts with the Finance Ministry, Island Aviation, and the Transport Ministry are underway to finalize plans for the second aircraft’s operational debut by October.
“The flights commencing today will connect to select regions in China. Future plans include expanding our reach to additional destinations for tourist arrivals,” added President Muizzu.
Emphasizing the significance of this development, he remarked on its role in bolstering economic growth initiatives.
The ceremony was attended by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen. Senior officials from Island Aviation, along with various ministers and parliament members, were also present.
To celebrate this milestone—the introduction of Maldivian’s largest aircraft in its 24-year history—an air show is currently being staged in Male’s Usfasgandu area and across Phase 1 and Phase 2 of Hulhumale’.
The new wide-body aircraft boasts a capacity of 264 passengers and is scheduled to commence flights on the 22nd of this month. Maldivian officials have previously confirmed that this aircraft will serve routes to three Chinese cities as well as destinations in Europe.
