The Maldives has made a strong start to 2025, welcoming over 32,000 tourists in the first five days of the year as the island nation aims to surpass last year’s record-breaking milestone.
According to statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism, 32,349 tourists arrived in the Maldives between January 1 and January 5. This represents a 17.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year, which recorded 27,544 arrivals. The average daily arrival rate stands at 6,470 tourists.
Russia currently leads as the top source market, contributing 6,485 tourists, followed by Italy with 5,285 visitors and the United Kingdom with 2,175. Other key markets include Germany, with 2,002 arrivals, and India, contributing 1,127 tourists.
The data also shows that resorts have seen the highest influx of tourists, accommodating 70 percent of arrivals, while guesthouses hosted 23.3 percent, reflecting the continued preference for the country’s luxury island experiences.
The Maldives’ tourism sector achieved a significant milestone in 2024, recording 2,047,435 tourist arrivals—the highest in its 52-year history. This marks a nine percent increase from 2023’s total of 1,878,543 arrivals, making 2024 the first year the Maldives welcomed over two million tourists.
Building on this success, the government has set ambitious goals for 2025, aiming to increase tourist arrivals by 15 percent and boost tourism revenue to USD 5 billion.
With its pristine islands, world-class resorts, and warm hospitality, the Maldives continues to cement its reputation as a top-tier global destination. The strong start to the year reflects the nation’s efforts to enhance tourism offerings and expand market reach, as it seeks to build on the momentum of last year’s achievements.
