The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has predicted an improvement in weather conditions across most of the country starting next week. This comes after weeks of torrential rain and thunderstorms that have caused disruptions in several areas.
According to the national weather agency, scattered rain, along with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms, will persist over the next 24 hours. Wind speeds are expected to range from 13 to 23 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour during storms. The agency also warned of rough seas during this period.
However, the weather is expected to begin gradually clearing after Saturday, bringing calmer seas and more stable conditions to the archipelago.
The Maldives has been grappling with severe weather this month as the nation transitions from the Hulhangu Monsoon to the Iruvai Monsoon. The heavy rains and associated swell waves have led to widespread flooding across multiple islands, including the capital, Malé City. Scores of residents have been temporarily displaced due to water damage in their homes and businesses.
Authorities have urged caution, especially for seafarers and those in flood-prone areas, as the current rough conditions persist. The anticipated break in bad weather is likely to bring much-needed relief to affected communities and ease disruptions across the country.
