Maafaru International Airport, managed by Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL), reported a significant increase in private jet traffic in December 2024, with 98 private jets landing during the month.
This uptick follows the completion of a major runway expansion project, which extended the runway to 2,850 meters, allowing the accommodation of larger aircraft, including Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s.
The airport, strategically located in Noonu Atoll, serves as a key entry point for tourists visiting luxury resorts in Noonu, Raa, and Baa Atolls. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to bolster tourism in the northern Maldives, providing seamless access for high-net-worth individuals seeking exclusive travel experiences.
Reflecting on the airport’s performance, Mumthaz Ali, General Manager of Airports at IASL, stated, “The advancements we made last year demonstrate our dedication to innovation and excellence. The annual performance and December figures at Maafaru International Airport provide evidence of the airport’s increasing position as a leading luxury aviation hub.”
The surge in private jet landings coincides with the peak holiday season, underscoring Maafaru International Airport’s pivotal role in supporting the Maldives’ tourism sector and economic growth strategies.
