Three Indian nationals to be deported following Artificial Beach altercation

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 18, 2025

Maldives Immigration has announced plans to deport three Indian nationals involved in a violent altercation at Artificial Beach in Male’ City on Friday evening. The incident, reported to police around 8:30 PM, escalated when the foreign nationals assaulted a Maldivian bystander who was recording the scene.

A video circulating on social media captures the chaotic scene, showing a large crowd at the beach and police officers actively managing the situation. The footage also depicts an individual being escorted into a police vehicle.

Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, confirmed that the Maldives Police Service has transferred custody of the three individuals to immigration authorities. He stated that deportation proceedings are underway and emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards foreign nationals engaging in activities that threaten public safety. “No further opportunities will be given to individuals who commit such offenses,” Shamaan asserted.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern of altercations involving expatriates at Artificial Beach, particularly on Fridays, which coincide with their weekly day off. In a previous incident, a Maldivian infant sustained injuries during a similar confrontation.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining public order and ensuring that actions jeopardizing community welfare are addressed decisively. The swift decision to deport the individuals involved underscores the Maldivian government’s firm stance against behavior that endangers public interest, regardless of nationality.
