Tonight addressing at the graduation ceremony of the 38th Police Initial Training Course, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau called upon officers to minimize personal mobile phone usage during duty hours, citing public concerns over officers being distracted by their devices.
Commissioner Shujau highlighted that the public has frequently observed officers engrossed in their phones while on duty, leading to complaints about inattentiveness. He emphasized the need for officers to remain vigilant and attentive to their surroundings to effectively serve the community.
Beyond addressing phone usage, Commissioner Shujau outlined additional expectations for the newly graduated officers. He stressed the importance of maintaining polite and respectful communication with the public, noting that courteous interactions are essential for building trust and resolving negative perceptions associated with the police force.
Furthermore, he reminded officers that the authority vested in them should not be exercised arbitrarily. He urged them to prioritize resolving situations without resorting to force, aligning with the principles of proportionality and restraint.
Commissioner Shujau also extended his congratulations to the graduates and expressed gratitude to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his efforts in enhancing police resources.
These directives align with the Maldives Police Service’s recently launched five-year strategic plan, which emphasizes combating criminal threats, prioritizing community engagement, modernizing infrastructure, fostering effective governance, and ensuring accountability and ethical conduct.
By adhering to these guidelines, the Maldives Police Service aims to strengthen public trust and uphold the highest standards of professionalism in law enforcement.
