On the occasion of the International Day of Clean Energy, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ firm commitment to transitioning to renewable energy sources as part of its ongoing battle against climate change. Speaking on the importance of this global initiative, the President highlighted how crucial it is for nations, especially vulnerable ones like the Maldives, to take action in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and securing the planet’s future.
“As a low-lying island nation, acutely vulnerable to climate change, investing in renewable energy is a vital commitment for the future of the Maldives,” President Muizzu declared, emphasizing the urgency of clean energy for ensuring the country’s long-term sustainability.
Over the past few years, the Maldives has made remarkable progress in advancing its renewable energy capacity, particularly focusing on solar power. As part of its green energy agenda, the country has set an ambitious goal to generate 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028. To achieve this, the government has laid down a robust framework, including the Energy Act, complemented by a detailed roadmap that ensures energy supply remains reliable, sustainable, and affordable.
President Muizzu also commended the private sector for its proactive role in the transition to renewable energy, recognizing the investments being made to support this shift. “These investments not only contribute to global climate goals but also bolster our energy security and economic resilience,” he remarked, encouraging further participation from the private sector.
In his message, the President also expressed deep appreciation for the support from international financing partners who have helped turn the Maldives’ renewable energy aspirations into a reality. He called for continued and enhanced financial support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), emphasizing that these nations, with their unique challenges, require substantial assistance in their pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.
In closing, President Muizzu reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the Maldives’ fragile islands and fostering a healthier environment. He also underscored the nation’s determination to lead by example, positioning the Maldives as a global model for clean energy innovation. “The Maldives is determined to establish itself as a global leader in clean energy, for the greater benefit of the nation and the planet,” he concluded.
Through these deliberate efforts and strategic initiatives, the Maldives is paving the way for a cleaner, greener future, setting a strong example for other nations to follow in addressing the pressing climate crisis.
