In a firm rebuke, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has denounced U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and bring the territory under American control. Addressing the People’s Majlis during its reopening session, President Muizzu emphasized the Maldives’ unwavering support for Palestinian sovereignty.
Maldives’ Stance on Palestinian Sovereignty
President Muizzu reiterated that Gaza rightfully belongs to the Palestinian people and condemned any actions aimed at displacing them. He highlighted the Maldives’ active role in international legal proceedings, noting the country’s submission of a Declaration of Intervention in support of South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Additionally, the Maldives has sought an advisory opinion from the ICJ regarding Israel’s responsibilities concerning humanitarian aid efforts in Palestine.
International Backlash Against Trump’s Proposal
President Trump’s suggestion to transform Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East” under U.S. stewardship has sparked widespread international condemnation. Critics have labeled the plan as a form of ethnic cleansing and a violation of international law. Key U.S. allies, including Saudi Arabia and Jordan, have also rejected the proposal, emphasizing their support for a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.
Maldives’ Commitment to Palestinian Rights
The Maldives has consistently demonstrated its dedication to the Palestinian cause. In December 2024, the nation co-sponsored a United Nations General Assembly resolution affirming Gaza as Palestinian territory and opposing any efforts to remove its inhabitants. President Muizzu affirmed that the Maldives will never support actions by any party to displace Palestinians from Gaza.
Advocacy for Pre-1967 Borders
Reaffirming the Maldives’ foreign policy stance, President Muizzu called for adherence to pre-1967 borders, recognition of East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. He assured that his government will continue to provide full cooperation, support, and assistance to the Palestinian people in their pursuit of self-determination.
The Maldives’ position aligns with the broader international consensus advocating for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, grounded in respect for international law and the rights of the Palestinian people.
