President Mohamed Muizzu has vowed to restore and enhance two key landmarks in the capital, Rasfannu Beach and Sultan Park, promising a complete renovation to make them more accessible and enjoyable for the people of Malé. In a statement shared on social media, the President expressed his disappointment over the current state of these beloved locations, emphasizing that both areas had fallen into disrepair.
“These places have brought joy and satisfaction to the people of Malé,” President Muizzu said. “It is regretful to see them in such a deteriorated condition, and the government will make special efforts to restore and improve them.”
Rasfannu, an artificial beach developed during Muizzu’s tenure as Housing Minister in 2016, is one of Malé’s most visited recreational spots. The beach features benches for family relaxation, a hut and barbecue facilities for fishermen, and designated parking areas for visitors. Despite its original success, Rasfannu has suffered from a lack of proper maintenance, leading to a decline in the amenities available to the public.
Similarly, Sultan Park, originally redeveloped during Muizzu’s time as minister, was later rebranded as Rasrani Park and saw significant improvements, including new playgrounds for children and family-friendly spaces. However, like Rasfannu, the park has also been poorly maintained in recent years, with many of its features falling into disuse.
Both Rasfannu and Sultan Park were designed to offer much-needed recreational spaces in the densely populated city of Malé. These locations were intended to provide residents with green spaces and leisure activities, but now, after years of neglect, many of the facilities that were initially developed at great cost are no longer functioning properly.
President Muizzu’s announcement has sparked hope that these vital public spaces will soon be restored to their former glory, with a focus on improving the quality of life for the people of Malé. His commitment to reviving Rasfannu and Sultan Park is seen as part of a broader effort to enhance urban spaces and provide the public with more accessible recreational areas.
