A significant milestone in child welfare was achieved as 67 children under state custody were successfully reunited with their families, thanks to the “A Family for Every Child” programme. Launched by the current government, this initiative is part of a broader policy to ensure every child grows up in a loving family environment, surrounded by compassion and care.
At a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr. Aishath Shiham, shared the success of the programme, noting that the 67 children had been placed back with their biological families, close relatives, or through fostering arrangements.
Dr. Shiham emphasized that while children may be placed in state custody due to various circumstances, the ultimate goal is to reunite them with their families whenever possible. “It is the state’s responsibility to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow up in a family setting filled with love and care,” she stated. “The main aim is to provide better opportunities for these children and to reunite them with their families as soon as a safe and supportive environment is available.”
To support this initiative, the government has allocated a monthly allowance of MVR 5,000 to foster families without biological ties to the children. This allowance helps cover the costs of raising children in foster care, ensuring they receive the necessary support.
The Ministry of Social and Family Development also takes special care to ensure that the environment the children are returning to is safe and stable. Before the handover, thorough checks are made to guarantee that the family can provide a nurturing and secure home. Furthermore, the Ministry offers mental health services and guidance for families on best practices for child care, helping them foster an environment of compassion.
After the children are handed over, the Ministry continues to monitor their well-being, ensuring they receive ongoing support. This includes access to education, skills training, and resources to help prepare them for future employment opportunities.
The “A Family for Every Child” programme reflects the government’s commitment to the well-being and future of the nation’s youth, ensuring that every child has the chance to thrive in a supportive family environment.
