The State Trading Organization (STO) has announced the arrival of its first shipment of coconuts for the month of Ramadan, with plans to sell them at a significantly reduced price of MVR 5 per kilogram. This initiative is part of the organization’s efforts to stabilize prices of essential food items during the holy month.
STO has long been focused on ensuring that the public has access to affordable and high-quality food products during Ramadan, and this year is no different. The organization has stated that it will continue to monitor market fluctuations closely, with a particular focus on price increases, and take immediate action to keep costs under control.
In addition to coconuts, which are typically sold at much higher prices — ranging from MVR 10 to MVR 25 per kg — STO will also offer lemons at its People’s Choice stores starting Saturday. These measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure that everyday necessities remain accessible to consumers, particularly during a time when food prices tend to rise due to increased demand.
To further support the public, STO has prepared to import a variety of food items in four key categories for Ramadan. These include essential staples such as onions, eggs, garlic, coconuts, and dates, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. The organization aims to provide both businesses and households with good opportunities to access affordable food during this crucial period.
STO’s focus on price stabilization and availability aligns with its long-standing commitment to ensuring that Maldivians are able to meet the demands of Ramadan without financial strain. The coconut sale, starting tomorrow, is expected to provide some relief to consumers as they prepare for the festive season.
