Fulfilling a key promise from his first year in office, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has initiated the distribution of canned fish to households across the Maldives in preparation for Ramadan. The State Trading Organisation (STO) announced that the official distribution begins tonight at 8:30 PM and will continue until 11:00 PM.
Each household is set to receive a case containing 48 cans of fish, with allocations determined based on electricity meter numbers. This initiative aims to support over 80,000 households nationwide, ensuring they have essential food supplies during the holy month.
Designated distribution points in Male’ City include:
- MIFCO Office Compound
- Henveiru MTCC Sawmill
- Vilimale’ WAMCO Site
- Hulhumale’ Umar Zahir Building
- Hiyaa Tower 10, Youth Center
The distribution schedule is as follows:
- Thursday (Today): 8:30 PM – 11:00 PM
- Friday: No distribution
- Saturday: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM and 8:30 PM – 11:00 PM
- Sunday to Thursday: 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM – 11:00 PM
STO has indicated that additional distribution points may be established, with further announcements to be made as needed.
This effort is part of a broader government strategy to stabilize prices of essential goods during Ramadan. Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, highlighted that the government is collaborating with STO to maintain stable prices for over 140 essential food items, including 93 basic household items, 38 varieties of fruits and vegetables, and 10 categories of fish and seafood. These measures are set to commence on March 1.
In line with these efforts, STO has imported essential commodities to ensure affordability. Notably, coconuts are now available at MVR 5 per coconut, a significant reduction from the previous market price range of MVR 10 to MVR 25.
President Muizzu’s leadership in these initiatives underscores the administration’s commitment to supporting citizens and ensuring food security during the sacred month of Ramadan.
