Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has praised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to boost the global presence of Maldivian products, following the successful signing of a deal between local company Ensis Fisheries Pvt Ltd and a Chinese firm. This agreement marks a significant step under the Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA), allowing Ensis Fisheries to export a range of fish products to China.
The signing ceremony took place in Beijing, China, earlier this week. Under the agreement, Ensis Fisheries will export canned and frozen fish to China, marking a major milestone for Maldivian businesses seeking to expand into international markets. The China-Maldives FTA, which came into effect in January 2025, aims to facilitate trade between the two countries by reducing tariffs and streamlining the process for exports and re-exports.

Minister Saeed expressed his support for Ensis Fisheries’ entry into the Chinese market, congratulating the company on its preparations to export its products under the FTA. He attributed the success to President Muizzu’s proactive steps in creating opportunities for Maldivian products on the global stage, saying, “The President’s efforts are showing tangible results, and we are beginning to see the positive impact of his work to facilitate international sales.”
The FTA is expected to significantly boost exports from the Maldives, particularly fish products, as well as other goods. The government has emphasized that the agreement will not only enhance trade relations with China but also create new business opportunities and employment within the Maldives, particularly in sectors related to manufacturing, processing, and exports.
Minister Saeed further highlighted the strategic importance of the agreement, noting that it will strengthen the country’s economic position by expanding market access for Maldivian products, ultimately benefiting local businesses and the broader economy.
