As Ramadan approaches, the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) is intensifying efforts to address the anticipated surge in electricity consumption in the Malé region. This year’s observance coincides with the hot season and school holidays, factors expected to significantly elevate household energy usage.
In a recent appearance on PSM News’ “Raajje Miadhu” program, STELCO’s General Manager, Ibrahim Nashid, highlighted the proactive measures underway to bolster the power supply. “To cater to the estimated demand for Malé, we ordered generators, transformers, and necessary switch gears in the middle of last year,” Nashid stated. “Some of the generators we needed have arrived in the Maldives. Once the land issues for installing the generators are resolved, we have now started that work and are proceeding. We are running approximately a 24-hour operation in Hulhumalé to install these generators.”
Historically, Ramadan has seen a 15% to 20% increase in electricity consumption. Last year, peak demand reached approximately 113 megawatts. This year, projections estimate an additional 15 megawatts, bringing the expected peak to nearly 130 megawatts. Nashid explained that during Ramadan, the usual evening decline in demand is delayed, with high consumption persisting until midnight or later.
Beyond immediate preparations, STELCO is undertaking significant infrastructure projects to ensure long-term energy stability. The company has commenced upgrades to Malé City’s electricity network, including replacing existing transformers with higher-capacity units to meet the growing demand. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a 150MW power plant in Thilafushi, utilizing both oil and gas to serve Malé and surrounding areas. This facility aims to provide a stable and reliable energy supply across these locations.
STELCO is also exploring sustainable energy solutions. The company has launched a wave monitoring project to harness renewable energy from ocean waves, marking a significant step towards diversifying the Maldives’ energy portfolio.
In light of the anticipated demand surge, STELCO urges residents to practice energy conservation. The public is encouraged to be mindful when using electrical appliances such as air conditioners, washing machines, ovens, and irons, to help manage consumption and ensure a stable power supply throughout the holy month.
