Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has signed an agreement with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to develop an airport on Fainu Island in Raa Atoll.
The project is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to enhance domestic transportation and promote economic development at both regional and national levels, according to MACL.
Currently, Raa Atoll has only one airport, located on Ifuru Island. During his visit to the atoll last month, President Muizzu assured that the construction of the Fainu airport would commence soon, emphasizing its role in boosting economic growth and creating job opportunities for surrounding islands.
MTCC’s Managing Director, Retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Ahmed Saudee, signed the agreement on behalf of MTCC, while MACL’s Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, represented MACL.
Announcing the contract signing, MACL stated, “This initiative is in alignment with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to enhancing transportation and driving economic growth across the country.”
MTCC also reaffirmed its commitment to improving infrastructure and connectivity, noting that the airport project is a key step in fulfilling the government’s domestic transport goals.
The new airport in Fainu is expected to improve accessibility for residents and businesses in Raa Atoll while contributing to the Maldives’ broader economic development plans.
