Ministry of Health, MFDA, and HPA Join Forces for Pre-Ramadan Food Safety Drive

By Hussain Shinan Published February 24, 2025

In a proactive measure to ensure consumer safety during the upcoming holy month, the government has initiated a comprehensive food safety inspection across restaurants, cafes, and marketplaces nationwide. The inspections, conducted jointly by the Ministry of Health, the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA), and the Health Protection Agency (HPA), commenced on Monday and will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Officials stated that the initiative is designed to verify that food items sold in shops and markets comply with the stringent standards set forth under the Food Safety Act. Inspectors are focusing on key areas including pest control measures, proper storage of food in refrigerators, adherence to label instructions regarding specific temperature requirements, expiration dates, packaging integrity, and overall food labeling.

This mass inspection forms part of a broader suite of government efforts to ensure public well-being during Ramadan—a period that sees a surge in food consumption and related activities. It comes on the heels of other initiatives led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, such as the Roadha Gift programme, which has successfully distributed tuna cases to 15,000 households in Malé, and the continuation of utility discounts on water and electricity bills for Ramadan.

Minister of Health representatives have emphasized that these rigorous checks are critical to preventing foodborne illnesses and ensuring that consumers have access to safe, high-quality food throughout the festive season.

The collaborative effort reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and supporting vulnerable families across the nation, as part of its broader strategy to enhance community well-being and economic resilience during Ramadan.

Residents and business owners alike are urged to cooperate with the inspectors as the government works to uphold food safety standards in anticipation of the increased demand during the holy month.
