A 24-year-old man tragically lost his life on Wednesday morning after crashing his motorbike on the Hankede Bridge in Addu City. The accident, which occurred at approximately 9:49 AM, has prompted an ongoing investigation by local authorities.
The victim, identified as Leevan Abdul Sattar from G. Night Dream, K. Male’, was reportedly speeding while traveling from Maradhoo to Hithadhoo when he lost control of his motorbike. He crashed into the fence at the bend of the bridge, resulting in fatal injuries. Police have confirmed the details of the accident but have not yet determined the exact cause.
The incident is the latest in a series of concerning accidents on the roads of Addu City. Just days earlier, an 18-year-old from Addu was critically injured in a motorbike crash while practicing for an upcoming racing tournament. The young man is currently on life support at the Addu Equatorial Hospital.
The hospital has raised alarms over the increasing number of road accidents in the region, with 277 incidents reported last year, and 27 occurring in just the past month. Hospital officials have stressed the need for greater road safety measures, as the city sees a worrying rise in traffic-related injuries and fatalities.
The Hankede Bridge, a newly opened public transport route, has also been the site of increased traffic activity since its launch earlier this month. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution while traveling across the bridge and throughout the city, especially in light of the recent spate of accidents.
As investigations continue into the latest fatal crash, the community remains shaken by the loss of another young life on Addu’s roads.
