No Cover-Ups, Only Justice! Minister Ihusaan Vows Full Transparency in Holhudhoo Zakiyya Case

By Ahmed Ashraf Published February 26, 2025

In a steadfast commitment to uncover the truth behind the death of 50-year-old Zakiyya Moosa, found with fatal neck injuries in her N. Holhudhoo residence last September, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has assured that the investigation will persist until all public concerns are thoroughly addressed.

During a recent visit to Holhudhoo, Minister Ihusaan, accompanied by senior police officials, engaged directly with residents who have been vocal in their demand for transparency and justice. Addressing the community, the Minister acknowledged the delay in his visit, offering a sincere apology for not arriving sooner to address the pressing issues.

Residents raised poignant questions regarding the absence of a postmortem examination, especially given the visible injuries on Zakiyya’s body. In response, Minister Ihusaan revealed that a foreign expert with extensive experience in autopsies had examined the body. However, he conceded that the decision not to send the body abroad for a formal autopsy might have been a misstep.

Emphasizing the government’s dedication to a comprehensive investigation, Minister Ihusaan stated, “The inquiry into Zakiyya’s death will continue unabated until we provide satisfactory answers to all questions posed by the public.” He also urged anyone with pertinent information to come forward, assuring opportunities for private discussions for those preferring confidentiality.

The tragic discovery of Zakiyya’s body on September 10, 2024, has since ignited a series of protests in Holhudhoo, with residents expressing deep concerns over the circumstances surrounding her death. In response to the escalating unrest, the Maldives Police Service has sought assistance from the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to gain additional expert insights into the case.

As the investigation progresses, both local authorities and international partners remain committed to ensuring a transparent and thorough examination, aiming to bring clarity and justice to Zakiyya’s grieving family and the concerned community of Holhudhoo.
