President Muizzu Announces Major Redevelopment Plans for Sultan Park with New Technology and Sports Facilities

By Hussain Shinan Published February 28, 2025

Sultan Park, a historic landmark in Malé, is set to undergo a major redevelopment, which will introduce the latest technology and additional sports facilities aimed at enhancing the public’s experience. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced these exciting plans during the inauguration of the newly renovated Izzuddeen Jetty last night, a key part of the ongoing improvements in the area.

Speaking at the event, President Muizzu highlighted that Sultan Park had been neglected for some time and that it had previously been managed by the Malé City Council. He assured the public that the government has now taken charge of the park’s redevelopment, which aims to transform it into a modern and family-friendly space that will serve the needs of all citizens.

“Within the next six months, Sultan Park will be transformed into a facility that will engage youth and children, offering opportunities for learning while celebrating Maldivian culture through the use of the latest technologies,” said President Muizzu. “The goal is to create a space where children and families can enjoy themselves, and the entire surrounding area, including Izzuddeen Bridge and Republic Square, will also benefit from these developments.”

The President also revealed plans for new sports facilities, which are expected to include amenities currently unavailable in the city, such as a bowling alley. These additions are part of a broader vision to create an inclusive, engaging space that meets the needs of Malé’s residents.

Sultan Park was originally developed during President Muizzu’s tenure as Housing Minister. However, the park had seen little improvement in the last five years under the previous administration. The upcoming redevelopment is set to restore Sultan Park to its former glory, making it one of the largest and most vibrant recreational spaces in the city.

Once the project is complete, the area surrounding Sultan Park, including key landmarks like Izzuddeen Bridge, will be transformed into a dynamic zone that supports both community interaction and recreational activities. With the park’s redevelopment, the government hopes to offer Malé residents a state-of-the-art space for relaxation, learning, and entertainment.
