In a decisive response to the severe weather conditions battering the Maldives, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared today, March 2, 2025 (today), a public holiday. This announcement comes as relentless heavy rainfall has led to widespread flooding across numerous islands, including the capital city, Malé.
The Maldives Meteorological Service issued a Yellow Alert, effective until 7 a.m. today, spanning from Baa Atoll to Dhaalu Atoll. The alert warns of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and potential flooding in these regions.
In Malé, continuous rainfall since yesterday evening has resulted in significant street flooding, with water infiltrating many homes. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is actively engaged in dewatering efforts, operating in six areas of the capital. To date, they have assisted 85 households and deployed 707 sandbags to mitigate water intrusion.
Presidential Spokesperson Heena Waleed conveyed the President’s decision on X, stating, “Due to continuous heavy rainfall and flooding in some areas, causing difficulties and hardships for many citizens, the President has declared March 2, 2025 (today) as a public holiday.”
