In a significant move underscoring his administration’s commitment to the elderly, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu convened with the Maldives Senior Citizens Association at the President’s Office on Tuesday. The dialogue centered on addressing the challenges faced by senior citizens and amplifying their participation in societal programs.
Expressing gratitude for the recent reopening of the ‘Isravvehinge Naadhee’ social center, association members highlighted the necessity of enhancing its operations to encourage greater involvement from the elderly community. They also voiced concerns about the scarcity of office spaces for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like theirs, which play a pivotal role in societal development.
Responding to these concerns, President Muizzu reiterated his manifesto pledge to support NGOs actively. He unveiled plans for constructing an office complex dedicated to various organizations contributing to the nation’s progress, emphasizing that this initiative aligns with his broader vision for sustainable development. The President assured that the project would proceed within the established budgetary framework and adhere to the government’s structured procedures.
Association members further stressed the importance of fostering a more civilized society and expressed their eagerness to share their wealth of experience for the nation’s benefit. President Muizzu apprised them of ongoing governmental initiatives aimed at strengthening the social fabric and promoting civility. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to addressing the issues raised, ensuring that senior citizens remain integral to the Maldives’ developmental narrative.
This engagement reflects the administration’s broader commitment to inclusive development, as evidenced by recent initiatives such as the inauguration of the ‘Isravvehinge Naadhee’ center, which serves as a testament to the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for senior citizens. The center, inaugurated by President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed on February 17, 2024, stands as the first facility under the government’s initiative to construct dedicated social centers for the elderly.
By actively involving senior citizens and supporting NGOs, President Muizzu’s administration aims to harness the invaluable experience of the elderly, ensuring their contributions continue to shape the nation’s future positively.
