The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) reported a significant rise in electricity consumption in the Malé region, with usage exceeding 100 megawatts for the first time this Ramadan on Monday. This surge aligns with the onset of the southwest monsoon’s typically hot days, following an initial period of inclement weather and rain at the start of Ramadan.
STELCO’s statistics indicate that average electricity usage during midday and nighttime hours in Malé and Hulhumalé consistently surpasses 90 megawatts. The recent increase in temperature has contributed to higher electricity consumption during the holy month. Anticipating further rises in demand, STELCO has urged consumers to adopt energy conservation measures.

In response to the seasonal spike in utility usage, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has implemented a 10% discount on electricity and water bills for Ramadan. This initiative, aimed at alleviating financial burdens on the public, is projected to cost approximately 160 million rufiyaa. The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has also announced that if the April water bill exceeds the average amount billed in the previous nine months, the excess will be deducted as a discount, ensuring that household charges do not surpass average usage in other months.
These measures reflect the government’s commitment to supporting citizens during periods of increased utility consumption, ensuring that essential services remain affordable throughout Ramadan.
