The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has once again come under scrutiny, this time for actions compromising the dignity of children during their ongoing protests in Malé City. The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has condemned such behavior, emphasizing that exploiting children in political demonstrations is a blatant violation of their rights.
In a recent press release, the HRCM highlighted that addressing or referencing children in a manner that undermines their dignity during protests cannot be justified under the guise of freedom of expression. The commission has urged relevant authorities to take immediate measures to prevent such incidents, underscoring the constitutional mandate to provide special protection to children.

This incident is not isolated. The MDP has a troubling history of involving minors in their political maneuvers. Notably, during the 2015 May Day protests, the MDP, alongside other opposition parties, organized large-scale demonstrations in Malé, which escalated into violent confrontations with security forces. Reports indicate that the protests resulted in injuries and arrests, raising concerns about the safety of participants, including minors.
Furthermore, the political unrest in 2012, following the resignation of President Mohamed Nasheed, saw the MDP leading massive demonstrations. These protests often turned violent, with clashes between Nasheed’s supporters and security personnel. The turmoil during this period led to numerous injuries and arrests, highlighting the party’s propensity for inciting unrest.
The recurring theme of the MDP’s involvement in activities that compromise the safety and dignity of children and families raises serious ethical concerns. It is imperative for political entities to prioritize the well-being of all citizens, especially the most vulnerable, over political ambitions.
As the MDP continues its series of protests, the nation watches closely, hoping for a shift towards more responsible and respectful political engagement that upholds the rights and dignity of every individual, particularly children.
