The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has reported a notable increase in daily electricity consumption in Malé and Hulhumalé during the past week, surpassing usage levels observed in the initial seven days of Ramadan. This uptick has led the utility provider to implement strategic measures to ensure uninterrupted power supply throughout the holy month.
STELCO’s General Manager, Ahmed Sharmeel, highlighted that electricity usage has consistently peaked at similar times each day, with overall daily consumption on the rise compared to the earlier days of Ramadan. In response to this growing demand, STELCO has proactively established a backup power plant in Hulhumalé. This initiative is part of a comprehensive effort to bolster infrastructure ahead of the peak season. Sharmeel emphasized that preparations began last year, including the procurement of new engines and completion of essential technical tasks. The first shipment of four engines arrived on January 14th, followed by an additional four engines a month later, underscoring STELCO’s commitment to meeting the escalating energy needs of the community.
Anticipating further increases in electricity consumption in the coming days, STELCO has urged the public to adopt energy conservation practices to mitigate potential strain on the power grid. In a move to alleviate the financial burden on citizens during Ramadan, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a 10% discount on electricity and water bills. This initiative is expected to cost approximately MVR 160 million and reflects the government’s dedication to supporting households during the holy month.
The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has detailed the discount calculation method, which involves comparing a customer’s “normal month” consumption—derived from the average of nine months in the previous year, excluding high-consumption periods like February, March, and April—to their usage during Ramadan. This approach ensures that customers receive a minimum 10% reduction on their bills, with potential for additional savings based on individual consumption patterns.
These concerted efforts by STELCO and the government aim to ensure a stable and affordable electricity supply during Ramadan, addressing both the increased demand and the economic well-being of Maldivian households.
