In a recent case that has captured public attention, 25-year-old Mohamed Farih from Chandhanee, HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, was apprehended by police on suspicion of motorcycle theft. During a routine stop, officers requested Farih to open the motorcycle’s seat compartment—a task he was unable to perform, raising suspicions about the vehicle’s ownership.
At his remand hearing in the Criminal Court, Farih contended that he had mounted the motorcycle by mistake. He explained that he intended to use his brother’s motorcycle, which was parked adjacent to the one in question. According to the remand order, Farih stated that his brother had been using a similar motorcycle for years, leading to his confusion.
The detention order further revealed that Farih, arrested on Sunday morning, has a history of similar offenses. Authorities also detained another individual suspected of assisting in the alleged theft; however, this person has since been released. Meanwhile, the court has sanctioned a 15-day detention period for Farih as investigations continue.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing vehicle thefts and the complexities that can arise when suspects claim mistaken identity. The case remains under investigation, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
