President Muizzu Ends Years of Disrespect: Families of November 3 Heroes Finally Get Proper Support

By Ahmed Ashraf Published March 19, 2025

In a profound demonstration of commitment to national heroes, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has authorized a substantial increase in financial support for the families of those who sacrificed their lives during the November 3, 1988, terrorist attack. Effective immediately, each parent, child, and widowed spouse of the martyred soldiers will receive a monthly allowance of MVR 9,000.

The Ministry of Defence’s newly released guidelines outline this initiative. Beyond immediate family members, the government extends its gratitude to civilians who exhibited exceptional bravery during the attack. Recipients of the Huravee Gold Medal, awarded for acts of valor without regard for personal safety, will receive MVR 9,000 monthly. Those honored with the Huravee Silver Medal are allocated MVR 8,000 per month, and individuals bestowed with the Color of Bravery will receive MVR 6,000 monthly. It’s important to note that these allowances will cease upon the recipient’s passing.

The tragic events of November 3, 1988, remain etched in our collective memory. On that day, a group of Maldivian rebels, assisted by armed mercenaries from the Sri Lankan Tamil militant organization PLOTE, attempted to overthrow the government. The insurgents infiltrated Malé, seizing key installations. However, their efforts were thwarted, thanks in part to the swift intervention of Indian armed forces under “Operation Cactus,” which restored order within hours. The attack resulted in the loss of 19 Maldivian lives, both military personnel and civilians, and left many others injured.

Historically, the government provided a modest allowance to the families of the martyred soldiers. Recognizing the need for increased support, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged to enhance these allowances, a promise now fulfilled with this substantial increment.

This initiative underscores the President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s deep respect and unwavering support for those who laid down their lives in defense of our sovereignty and for the families who continue to bear the weight of their loss.
