In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Maldivian authorities apprehended three individuals in Malé on March 20, 2025, seizing approximately 1.5 kilograms of illicit substances.

The suspects have been identified as Mohamed Shaneez, 46, from Naseemeege, S. Maradhoo Feydhoo; Mohamed Thibaaq, 39, M. Sairius, K. Malé; and Fareedha Abdurahmaan, 35, of Jambuge, V. Rakeedhoo.

Following their arrest, the Criminal Court mandated a 15-day detention for Thibaaq and Fareedha, while Shaneez received a 5-day detention order.

The operation, spearheaded by the Police Counter Narcotics Intelligence and Drug Enforcement units, targeted a residence in the Maafannu district of Malé. During the search, officers discovered the substantial quantity of drugs, underscoring the ongoing challenges the Maldives faces in combating narcotics trafficking.

The Maldives, with its strategic location in the Indian Ocean, remains vulnerable to drug trafficking and transnational crime. The government has been proactive in addressing these issues, implementing measures to curb the influx of illegal substances and enhancing rehabilitation programs for those affected.

This recent operation highlights the persistent efforts of Maldivian law enforcement to tackle the nation’s most pressing social problem. Authorities continue to investigate the case, aiming to dismantle networks contributing to the drug menace in the archipelago.
