‘Drug Princess’ Stays Behind Bars: Teresa Mendoza-Inspired Queenpin Gets 30-Day Remand Extension

By Ahmed Ashraf Published March 22, 2025

In a significant development in the ongoing battle against narcotics, the Criminal Court has extended the detention of 23-year-old Mariyam Zeena, dubbed the ‘Drug Princess’ by local media, for an additional 30 days. Zeena, hailing from Aahiya, H.A. Thuraakunu, was apprehended on February 21, 2025, following a police raid on an apartment in Hulhumalé Phase 1 that uncovered a substantial cache of illicit substances.

During the operation, authorities seized approximately 12.28 kilograms of methamphetamine and 1.58 kilograms of heroin. This marks one of the most significant drug busts in recent Maldivian history, reflecting the escalating challenges the nation faces in combating drug trafficking.

Initially detained for 15 days, Zeena’s remand has now been extended twice, totaling over a month in custody. The Criminal Court’s latest decision to prolong her detention underscores the gravity of the charges and the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The Maldives has intensified its efforts against drug-related crimes. In 2024, authorities seized drugs valued at approximately $84 million, a sixfold increase compared to the previous year. President Mohamed Muizzu highlighted these efforts, noting the deportation of over 150 expatriates linked to drug trafficking within the same period.

The Maldives Police Service continues to investigate Zeena’s case, aiming to dismantle the networks involved in the distribution of these narcotics. This incident underscores the persistent challenges faced by Maldivian authorities in combating drug trafficking within the archipelago.

As the investigation progresses, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, reinforcing the community’s role in the nation’s fight against narcotics.
