From 4PM Today: Greater Malé Bans Light Vehicles for 2 Hours, Heavy Ones Until 11:30PM

By Ahmed Ashraf Published March 30, 2025

In anticipation of today’s Eid al-Fitr celebrations, the Ministry of Transport has announced a temporary suspension of motorized land vehicle operations across the Greater Malé region—including Malé, Hulhumalé, and Vilimalé—from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM this evening.

This measure, detailed in a notice published in the government gazette yesterday, aims to facilitate communal activities and ensure public safety during the festive period.

Beyond the general vehicle prohibition, the ministry has also restricted the operation of heavy vehicles from 4:00 PM to 11:30 PM tonight.

However, specific exemptions apply during these hours. The following vehicles are permitted to operate:

  1. Motorized land vehicles utilized by security forces
  2. Ambulances
  3. Vehicles designated for individuals with special needs
  4. Public transport buses currently in service
  5. Vehicles authorized for departing passengers
  6. Vehicles granted special permission to operate during Eid hours

The Ministry has emphasized that violations of this directive will result in enforcement actions under Articles 67 and 68 of the Land Transport Act. Consequences for non-compliance include vehicle detention and towing by police authorities, along with fines starting from 750 Rufiyaa.

Residents and visitors are urged to adhere to these temporary restrictions to ensure a safe and enjoyable Eid celebration for all.
